How to set up an Excel-, OpenOffice- or CSV-spreadsheet for Kinship Calculation
1. Create a new spreadsheet file
Open your favored spreadsheet program (e.g. Apache OpenOffice Calc) and start with an empty spreadsheet.
2. Add an "ID" cloumn
To identify your sample later at the YHRD we add a column for that.
3. Add a "Role" column for assignment
Add a “Role” column to assign each row to a specific role at the calculation. Possible values are “Ancestor” and “Descendant” (mandatory in bold).
4. Add a column for each Y-STR marker
Add all Y-STR markers in this row - each in a separate cell. You may want to highlight this row with bold font face. Please do not add any unnecessary cell here as they cannot be assignd to any meaningful Y-STR at the YHRD.
5. Add your first sample
Add your first sample in the second row starting with the appropriate sample name and role followed by the alleles of the Y-STRs of each column. Even though the YHRD is understanding a lot of different allele notations, we highly encourage you to use comma-separated alleles like “10,11” and give intermediate alleles with dots like “10.1”. Null-alleles are given by “0”. Please avoid alleles like “OL”, “<14”, “-“ and so on. Always have a look at the list of observed alleles found at the appropriate locus information page to validate your results. Any sample considered for calculation need a role assignment. Possible values are “Ancestor” and “Descendant”.
6. Add more samples
Add each sample in a separate row and name them accordingly. Any sample considered for calculation need a role assignment. Possible values are “Ancestor” and “Descendant”.
